Waking the next morning, I quickly realized I was in trouble. Just a few steps would knock me out of my breath. At this point, the smart thing to do would have been to turn around and hitch out of Kenosha Pass for a few days but my friends had taken vacation and only had a week to spend out here so we pushed forward. The climb up to Georgia Pass would knock me on my ass every hundred feet of climb. By the time we made it over and to camp, I planted face down on my Thinlight and just passed out for an hour before I even set up camp and went to bed too tired to eat dinner (88.3).
The next two days would be the slow walk to Breck (100.3 and 104). I definitely had a fever at this point and was waking up in sweats, mornings would be slow and miserable and I pretty much stopped eating. I should mention views were incredible at the top of the pass and on ward. We made it in, I got an IV drip and an oxygen hookup, started to feel a little better. We stayed at the Bivvi which was an absolutely spectacular hostel (104).
We grabbed a ride out early to begin climbing the Tenmile Range. It was a sharp climb up and the clouds were grey all day resulting in some thunderstorm worries but nothing started coming down until we were coming up on the Copper Mountain Restaurant and safely inside enjoying burgers and fries. After waiting the storm out, we kept walking a little to set up a quick camp outside the resort (120.3)
Next morning, we climbed over Serle and Kokomo Pass enjoying great weather and views all day. This was one of my favorite days yet. I finally started to feel like the fever was gone and felt revitalized with energy. We set up camp near the Camp Hale ruins and enjoyed a small fire and a bit of whiskey (136.4) before walking into Leadville for a nearo (142.8). The next few days, I'd continue to enjoy great weather as I made my way through the Holy Cross Wilderness (160.8) and then summited Mt Massive (166.7) which was my first 14er and one of the hardest hikes of my life where I almost quit 500 ft before the top before receiving encouragement from fellow hikers. Walked into Twin Lakes where I enjoyed the shade and company of other hikers as well as the hospitality of the General Store before setting up camp on the other side of the dam with new friends (182.9).
