The Creator's Blight

Something I've struggled with throughout my history of creating is finding the fine line of how to share your work. After I've spent a month or two on a big project, I'm excited to share it with my friends and family but always have the two little voices in the back of my head. One of them is the "You're too pushy, no one really wants to look at this" and the other one is "Why do you need the validation of others".

I guess I have to discuss the original reasons I began creating that might even explain some of these thoughts. When I went abroad the fall of sophomore year, I was experiencing a lot of awesome moments really fast. My parents were always curious as to what I was up to so I began taking photos and videos and putting them together to send to them. This is kind of where it all started and then I realized I really enjoyed the process and slowly bought a new camera and began really delving into this stuff.

So maybe my whole motivation behind creating was originally to share. Is that still my motivation? I'm not really sure. I think nowadays its more I just get an idea stuck in my head that doesn't stop nagging me until I execute it. But when I do finish something I'm proud of, I still have that same excitation to show my peers. And sometimes that feels wrong. Why can't I just be content and proud in the completion of the project itself? Why do I now feel the need to share it? I guess another point is that when I do finish something like a video, well I've always had this vision in my head and have been seeing it come to life for a few months. So its more exciting to me to be able to show the final product and introduce a new perspective to someone else.

So then I find myself tip toeing the line as carefully as I can. Share, but not too much. Offer the opportunity for others to take but don't push it. This website is a perfect example. After putting a decent amount of time in to set this up, how can I share without seeming like I'm bragging? As of this post, I've just sent it to a few friends that have always expressed interest in my work, but I'd love to get the word out more. I have a feeling this isn't a problem unique to me. Maybe there's a book somewhere out there that'll help. IDK maybe I need a PR guy.
